Uh-oh. Someone had tattled on her.

Sierra put on her best innocent look and asked, “What do you mean?”

Coop folded his arms, and though he was trying to look tough, there was humor in his eyes. “Don’t even try to pretend that you don’t know what I’m talking about. You know I can always tell when you’re lying.”

It was that mind-reading thing that he did. So annoying. “To call it ‘torment’ is an exaggeration. They were just…pranks. And you can’t tell me that she didn’t deserve it. She’s so mean.”

“She just quit.”

She gasped and slapped a hand over her heart. “She didn’t!”

“She did, just now in the kitchen. This is her last day.”

“Oh my gosh, Coop. I’m so sorry. I wanted to annoy her, not make her leave. This is all my fault. Do you want me to talk to her? Promise to behave from now on?”

He grinned and shook his head. “You may have accelerated the process, but she would have left eventually anyway. She said she’s been unhappy since the girls moved in. It wasn’t what she signed on for. I hired her five years ago, when I was still playing hockey and barely ever here. She liked it that way.”

“I still feel bad.”

“Don’t,” he said, and gestured to a framed photo on the dresser. “Is that your mom?”

She smiled and nodded. It was Sierra’s favorite shot of her. It was taken in the park, on a sunny spring afternoon. Her mom was sitting cross-legged in the grass on the old patchwork quilt they always used for picnics or at the beach, and she was looking up at the camera, smiling. “Wasn’t she beautiful?”

He walked over and picked it up. “Very beautiful.”

“She was always smiling, always happy. And it was infectious. You could not be in the same room and not feel like smiling. And she loved hugs, loved to snuggle. She and I would curl up on the love seat together every Sunday and read books or do crossword puzzles all day long. She was so much fun, always thinking up new adventures, trying new things. And my dad loved her so much. He never remarried. He didn’t even date very often. I don’t think he ever got over losing her. They never fought, never bickered. They had the perfect marriage.”

“She was Asian?” Coop asked.

She nodded. “Her grandmother was Chinese. I used to wish that I looked more like her.”

“You do look like her.”

“I actually favor my dad more. Joy looks more like she did.”

“You really miss her.”

She nodded. “Every day.”

He walked over to where she stood, took her hand and tugged her to him. She didn’t put up a fight when he pulled her close and looped his arms around her, and it felt so good to lay her head on his chest, to listen to the beat of his heart. He was so big and strong and he smelled so yummy.
